Jo-Elle Mogerman PhD ’10

The Philadelphia Zoo has named Jo-Elle Mogerman the first female and African American president and chief executive officer. of the nation's first zoo.

Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman has been named the next president and chief executive officer of the Philadelphia Zoo, the nation's first zoo. She will serve as the zoo's 15th president.  She is the first female and African American to serve in this role in the institution's 164-year history. She will assume the role in October 2023.

Dr. Mogerman has been director of the St. Louis Zoo WildCare Park in Missouri since 2019. Prior to her tenure at the St. Louis Zoo, Dr. Mogerman was vice president of learning and community at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and held leadership roles at the Brookfield Zoo in the Chicago for more than a decade.

Dr. Mogerman earned her PhD in biology from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago in 2010.
