Awards and Recognition

The University of Illinois Chicago celebrates the achievements and contributions of its community through a variety of awards and traditions that honor alumni, faculty and students. Rooted in a history of excellence, social justice and innovation, UIC recognizes outstanding graduates with prestigious awards, commemorates Golden Graduates — alumni marking 50 years since graduation — and honors community leaders with the Lighting of the Flame ceremony. Throughout the year, UIC continues to recognize and celebrate those who contribute to its vibrant and diverse community.

Every year the UIC Alumni Association (UICAA) is proud to recognize outstanding UIC alumni who have achieved extraordinary success in their respective fields and have made notable contributions to their communities. Nominations for the Alumni Achievement, Distinguished Service, Humanitarian, and Rising Star Leadership Awards are open from June to August. Nominations can be made by members of the UIC Community, other alumni, friends of the university, or through self-nominations. Awardees are honored at the annual Alumni Awards Celebration.

UIC Golden Grads participate in December commencement ceremony

The Golden Graduates Celebration is an annual event honoring alumni celebrating the 50th anniversary of their graduation. This year, the UIC Alumni Association invites the Class of 1975 to return to campus this December to celebrate the momentous occasion. Golden Graduates will don golden regalia during UIC’s December Commencement Ceremony and celebrate with their classmates at the Golden Graduates reception. Visit the Golden Graduates event page for more information and to register.

UIC Advancement partners with UIC Athletics to provide a special opportunity for distinguished members of the UIC community, who have exemplified extraordinary interest in and loyalty to UIC, to serve as torchbearers in the Lighting of the Flame.

First held in 1998, the Lighting of the Flame ceremony is typically held at either a large University gathering, such as Convocation, or before the start of a Flames men’s home basketball game. Torchbearers carry a symbolic torch onto the UIC Pavilion floor and light a cauldron while the school song is played.
